Ted Talks - Peter Calthorpe

Peter Scalthorpe talks about the sprawl model of cities, he said that it models of cities isolates people. I think that it is true, because in the sprawl model, people go to live to condominiums in the outskirts of the city. In the case of Santiago, people go to Chicureo, to Buin, to Nos and there they builds closed systems with private squares, private shops, and a select group of people that don’t interact with people from out the condominium. But it doesn’t happen only in the outskirt of the city, it also happens in Ñuñoa, Providencia, San Miguel, etc. Maybe the morphology of condominiums is different, in the outskirts are houses, in the center of city are towers, but at the end is the same.

I think that we have to create a city where everyone take part, either taking care of it or taking decision about the future of it. This way the city will evolve according to our necessities and it will evolve for us. According to the quality of city get better, the quality of our lives will be better too. Not only urbanist and architects have to shape the city, it has to be a collaborative work between specialist and the community at the end, people is going to live in the city, not the architect.
